Biography

Jemma has worked for over 15 years in the education and charity sector in the UK, South America and the Caribbean. She was a primary school governor and as a parent has been a parent reading volunteer. In 2008 she was appointed Deputy Director for the London based educational charity- Real Action- where she led on the charity’s children’s reading programme and ran three Saturday reading schools for children in deprived areas of London. She oversaw the expansion and development of the charity and throughout this time advocated for better literacy standards. She is motivated by the belief that reading is a human right which no child should be denied.

Jemma was appointed Development Manager of the World Literacy Foundation in September 2019, where her work focuses on developing and fundraising for the charity’s UK and international programmes in Africa and South America. She has a special interest in literacy and the teaching of reading and has always had a passion for reading. She is motivated by the simple pleasure of being able to pick up and read a good book- and the belief that this pleasure should be experienced by all.
