She has provided numerous workshops for teachers in reading and writing within her district and province. Teaching children to read has been a passion for Pamela and she continues to find ways to build success in students. Pamela resides in New Brunswick , Canada with her family. The session will provide teachers, and learning specialist with a research base framework successful for all children. Guided Reading is the most powerful instructional practice, with targeted practice to support all learners. With this strong research based reading practice in a flexible learning environment, students receive high quality targeted instruction that will support movement and engagement in reading. Flexible Grouping and Personalization of Instruction in Literacy
It was in the early fall of the school year 2017 to 2018 that I analyzed the school districts and provincial data results for literacy in the K to 3. Being new to the position as a Literacy Coordinator, I decided to engage the schools that were lagging behind the district and province in reading to have conversations about a strong research based reading practice in a flex grouping environment. This project was intentional and after reading, The Next Steps Forward in Guided Reading, by Jan Richardson, the framework for supporting all readers was then established. There is no instructional approach more powerful than guided reading. To change the lives of the vulnerable children and expand the gifted services for all children will leave the greatest impact. I wanted to change the trajectory to see lives of all our students changed for forever by simply being engaged in the love of reading.
My visits to schools and the conversations were very positive and they shared my vision and passion. It was then we looked at ways to maximize the positive impact of daily reading instruction in a flexible grouping environment during a six – week intervention for all students. We set out to create this intentional personalized targeted instruction completely designed for groups of students who have similar learning behaviors and strategies in reading. We wanted to accelerate the reading capabilities of all children and give them the opportunity to have guided reading instruction every day.
The project was a great success, with students reaching high levels of achievement and a high level of engagement in reading. The students made huge gains in reading and the rapid growth was completely amazing! In the first few weeks, the average growth was the increase in 2.5 levels in reading. My Literacy Team played a huge role in planning the project and supporting the teachers in the pre assessments and lesson planning for all groups. Overall, we have an improved sense of community and accomplishment due to the detailed pre-planning, continuous communication, data driven lesson planning and positive feedback. We as a group of professionals did a huge amount of learning and collaboration during the personalized Literacy Intervention.
Our greatest achievements, was the increase in reading levels for all our students and many have caught up and some have exceeded their grade level. The project continues to grow and the success in our Elementary schools have been tremendous. I have shared this project with my colleagues in the other parts of the province and now the Minister of Education has implemented a change to include this project in schools around the province of New Brunswick, Canada.
