THE ECONOMIC GAINS FROM UNIVERSAL LITERACY

Professor of Economics at the University of Munich and Director of the ifo Center for the Economics of Education. He is interested in the determinants of long-run prosperity and of student achievement. His research investigates the role of education for economic prosperity and the role of school-system institutions for efficiency and equity, often using international student achievement data. Together with Eric Hanushek, he has published “Universal Basic Skills: What Countries Stand to Gain”, which quantifies the economic gains from universal literacy. His work has won many awards and is widely cited in the research community and the policy arena.
